The second largest and the second most populous continent in the world, Africa covers 20.4% of the Earth’s land area and with a population of 1.1 billion (as counted in 2013), it has in its region, 15% of the human population of the world. It has been accounted that over half of the population is under the age of 19, giving it the youngest population among all continents. Most of the population follows Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, other prominent African religions.
Known for its expansive deserts, the world’s hottest desert, the Sahara Desert is located in Northern Africa. Brimming with honors, it can also boast of being the birthplace of the world’s longest river, River Nile, running through 11 different countries of the continent. The highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro is located at a height of 19,430 feet in Tanzania and is one of the most popular climbing destinations in the world.
The Maasai Mara Reserve of Kenya and the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania account for the world’s largest migration of wildebeest along with the big 5 game of the native African lion, elephant, leopard, cape buffalo and rhinoceros. Add to that The Kruger National Park of South Africa, the Okavango Delta of Botswana, the National Parks on Gambia river, among other national reserves in Africa, and the prolific abundance of wildlife will amaze anyone.
